VWC Field Director Mark Miller won the 2012 McCarthy Award for Environmental Conflict Resolution for the good work he did toward passage of the Ridge and Valley Act, which protected 53,000 acres in the Jefferson National Forest.
The prestigious award is given annually by the University of Virginia Institute of Environmental Negotiation on behalf of the Virginia Natural Resources Leadership Institute, a partnership program between the Virginia Department of Forestry, the Virginia Tech Center for Economic Education and U.Va.'s Institute for Environmental Negotiation. According to the press release, Mark was "instrumental in bringing varied stakeholders into the process, many of whom were not traditional supporters of wilderness protection, including hunters, mountain bikers, tourism interests, local government officials, business owners, garden clubs and faith groups." Now Mark is actively working with diverse stakeholders to protect the most outstanding wild places in the George Washington National Forest.
