Whites Peak Proposed Wilderness

Approximate Size:  4614 acres

Location: Rockbridge County, Virginia in the Pedlar District

Whites Peak is located just north of Buena Vista.  The area is 4614 acres.  There are no trails in the Whites Peak area.  The old Jordon Turnpike serves as the southern boundary.  This road could be utilized as a trail as well as provide vehicle access when necessary.  There is very little timber management in this area.  According to Forest Service stand data, the last timber sales in this area occurred in the early 1970's.  The Whites Peak area contains the prominent ridge tops know as McClure Peak, Whites Peak and Coates Mountain and protect the Whites Run and Rock Branch.  There are several stands of old growth with one stand dating back to 1875.
