Toms Knob Proposed Wilderness
Approximate Size: 7,879 acres
Location: Allegheny and Craig Counties, in the James River and Eastern Divide Districts
Topos: Allegheny, New Castle, Jordan Mines, Potts Creek
Toms Knob is located on the western flank of Potts Mountain, adjacent to the Barbours Creek Wilderness Area and north of Shawvers Run Wilderness Area. The Potts Mountain Jeep Road runs between Toms Knob and Barbours Creek Wilderness along the crest of the mountain; access to the road will not be affected by this proposal.
The rock outcrops on the crest of Potts Mountain provide beautiful views of the Potts Creek Valley and Peters Mountain to the west. Many small streams cascade down the mountainside and are tributaries of Potts Creek. Nichols Knob in the extreme northern part of this area is clearly visible from the surrounding countryside.
There is a small Special Biological Area located on the crest of the ridge, and small pockets of old growth. The short trails in the Shanty Hollow area are the only trails in this proposal.
All private landowner rights and access will be maintained.
