Three Ridges Wilderness

Located in Nelson County, the rugged Three Ridges Wilderness was designated in 2000 and has a total of 4,611 acres. The Appalachian Trail crosses through the Wilderness and combined with the other trail in the Wilderness, the three-mile long Mau-Har Trail, it creates a great loop. These trails are maintained by the Tidewater Appalachian Trail Club. There are two Appalachian Trail shelters within the Wilderness, the Maupin Fields Shelter to the north, and the Harpers Creek Shelter, 2.6 trail miles from the Tye River. Several old home sites in the Three Ridges Wilderness are gradually being reclaimed by nature.
