Paddy Lick Proposed Wilderness

Approximate Size:  5,444 acres

Location:  Highland and Bath Counties, Warm Springs District

Topos:  Paddy Knob, Sunrise

Located on the Virginia and West Virginia border, Paddy Lick boasts some of the highest elevations in the GWNF.  Located on Allegheny Mountain, Paddy Knob has an elevation of over 4477 feet.  Our wilderness proposal includes the northern end of this area, south of Rt. 84 and north of Upper Reservoir.

Paddy Knob is a steep ridge with many small streams, all of which feed into Back Creek.  Back Creek is popular with whitewater paddlers after significant rain events.  A 728-acre portion of this area is the Paddy Knob Special Biological Area and is home to species such as Bald Eagle, Mourning Warbler, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Roughhead Shiner, Southern Rock Vole, and Southern Water Shrew.

Most of the area is wild and rugged with significant stands of old growth.  The only trail is the Paddy Knob Trail which climbs over 2300 feet from Back Creek to the summit.

All private landowner rights and access will be maintained.
