Benson Run Proposed Wilderness
Approximate Size: 8,599 acres
Location: Highland County, North River Ranger District
Topos: Deerfield, Williamsville, McDowell
The Benson Run area is a long-standing premiere candidate for wilderness. Located on the western slope of Shenandoah Mountain south of Ramsey's Draft Wilderness Area, this mountain treasure is pristine, remote, and unspoiled. The entire watershed for Benson Run can be protected with this proposal. The area offers a true wilderness experience for those seeking solitude along the slopes of Gwin Mountain. There are several stands of Old Growth within the proposed boundaries.
The Shenandoah Mountain Trail and the Nelson Draft Trail are not included in the proposed boundaries to allow popular mountain bike rides to continue. The proposal is bounded by the power line to the north, Hamilton Draft Road and Liberty Road to the west, and Benson Run Road to the east.
All private landowner rights will be maintained.
