Archer Knob Proposed Wilderness
Approximate Size: 4,880 acres
Location: Augusta County, North River Ranger District
Topos: Craigsville, Deerfield, Elliott Knob, Augusta Springs
Archer Knob is the southern portion of Great North Mountain, just south of Elliott Knob. We recommend the eastern slope of the mountain for wilderness, with the North Mountain Trail as the eastern boundary (the trail is not included in the proposal), and FDR 381 as the western boundary.
The proposed area is wild and rugged. It is characterized by steep slopes dissected with numerous drainages including Kennedy Draft, Wallace Draft, Phillips Lick, and Archer Run. The Scott Hollow Barrens conservation site lies along the crest of the mountain in the northern part of the area, and significant stands of old growth can be found on the upper slopes. The Forest Service has identified a large area of "semi-primitive" lands here. Nonethless, much of it is considered suitable for timber harvesting and road construction.
Together with Elliott Knob, the contiguous wilderness area (separated by FDR 82) could be approximately 12,000 acres.
All private landowner rights and access will be maintained.
