Wildflower Walk in Ramseys Draft Wilderness
Date: Friday, May 9, 2025
Time: 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Place: Ramseys Draft Trail, beginning at trailhead at Mountain House parking area (directions below)
Distance: 1 mile
Leader: Lacey Dean
We will meet at the Mountain House parking area at 10:00 a.m. Directions to Mountain House parking area are below.
Designated by congress in 1984, the 6,518-acres of Ramseys Draft is where to go to escape from it all. The Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources has designated it a Virginia Bird & Wildlife Trail because of the old growth forests, including large maples, oaks, hickories, and few remaining large hemlocks that line the creek bed. Ramseys Draft is popular among birders because it provides nesting grounds for neotropical migrants that typically nest at high elevations.
We will be walking through the lower portion of the area which was a Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camp from 1933-37. The CCC was responsible for creating many of the trails that are still used today.
Directions: travel west from Churchville on U. S. Route 250 to the Mountain House parking area, on the right. Continue past the first parking lot (picnic tables, restrooms, etc.) to the second lot, which is closer to the trailhead. Carpooling is encouraged.
Bring: Lunch/snack, water, and wear sturdy hiking shoes.
Questions: Contact Lacey Dean, [email protected]
Registration: Required, see below.
Limit: 8 people
