Virginia's Mountain Treasures: The Unprotected Wildlands of the George Washington National Forest, a book by Mark Miller for The Wilderness Society, is now available for distribution. The publication describes 63 areas on the GWNF that should be protected from logging, road construction, and other forms of exploitative development. A map and ecological/geological information is included for each Mountain Treasure.
These Treasures provide clean water for many communities in Virginia and offer opportunities for outstanding backcountry recreation for locals and visitors alike. They also protect some of the last remaining stands of old-growth forest in Virginia and West Virginia while providing refuge for neo-tropical migratory songbirds, native brook trout, and other species that require large unbroken tracts of forest land.
This book seeks to raise awareness that these wildlands should receive meaningful consideration for protection in the current Forest planning process. To request your free copy, email us.
