Evening Salamander Hunt on Shenandoah Mountain

Join us!

UPDATE:  the salamander hunt occurred on August 19, a damp, warm summer night, perfect for the salamanders to come above ground.  The group spotted around 20 salamanders, including Cow Knobs, Shen Mtns, and Red-backs. Our thanks to Billy Flint, JMU Biologist who led the way!

Join VWC and Friends of Shenandoah Mountain to look for the famous and rare Cow Knob and Shenandoah Mountain Salamanders.  The date is Wednesday, August 19 at 7:00pm.  The salamanders like darkness and they like wet weather, so the date is subject to change.

Meet at the Reddish Knob parking area, in the George Washington National Forest.  If you'd like to sleep under the stars, bring along your tent and some food and water.  Planning to come? Let us know.

Directions to Reddish Knob:  Take Rt. 257 (Ottobine Rd.) West from Dayton, VA.  After 6 miles, turn Left at the Stop sign to stay on 257.  After 2.8 miles, turn Right to stay on 257.  This road (Briery Branch Rd) will take you into the GW National Forest and up Shenandoah Mountain. Follow Briery Branch Road and the signs (stay on paved road) about 10 miles all the way to the Reddish Knob parking lot.
