Bolshers Run Proposed Wilderness Area

Bolshers Run

Approximate Size:  5,417 acres

Location:  Augusta and Rockbridge Counties, North River Ranger District

Topos:  Deerfield, Williamsville, McDowell

The Bolshers Run proposed Wilderness Area anchors the southern end of the Jerkemtight Roadless Area, along the southeastern flank of southern Shenandoah Mountain.  The Shenandoah Mountain Trail is the western boundary.  The Shenandoah Mountain Trail and the road system to the southeast are all excluded from the proposed boundaries.

The area includes steep drainages to Bolshers Run and Stuart Run up to South Sister Knob and Wallace Peak.  The shale barrens near South Sister Knob have been designated as a Special Management area, protecting rare plants associated with the barrens.  The Roughhead Shiner and endangered Indiana Bat are also known to occur nearby.  There are significant stands of old growth located throughout the area.

All private landowner rights and access will be maintained.
